This song reminds me of two movies, both kind of related in a “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” sort of way…The movie The Green Mile
(if you haven’t seen it, just click that link go buy it now, because you’re going to love this flick) when John Coffey gets his last request before execution and they take him to see Top Hat with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. His face lights up during the movie, he says “Why, they’s angels. Angels… jus’ like up in heaven,” and then at the execution, he’s crying and singing “Heaven, I’m in heaven. Heaven, I’m in heaven,” over and over again. It just breaks your heart!
Of course in Top Hat, Fred Astaire sings the song, and the version above is Louis Armstrong – but I suppose there’s a connection there too in some strange way!
