Lena Horne – I’m glad there is you

Lena Horne – I’m glad there is you

The Muppet Show – where every celebrity found themselves at some point in time. Jim Henson was a genius, and I was an addict. LOL
In this clip, Gonzo is feeling pretty low after Animal ruins one of his acts. He runs off the stage and into Ms. Horne’s dressing room, bangs his head on the door in despair, and is then consoled by Lena with these words:
“In this world of ordinary people, extraordinary people, I’m glad there is you
In this world of overrated pleasures, underrated treasures, I’m glad there is you…”

Incidentally, this is the song she sang on that episode …read more

Lena Horne and Kermit the Frog – It’s Not Easy Bein’ Green

Lena Horne and Kermit the Frog – It’s Not Easy Bein’ Green

One of my favorite memories of Lena Horne on television was when she was on the 1985 episode of “The Cosby Show”, where Rudy Huxtable asked Lena if she could meet Kermit. What she was referring to was this clip from Classic Sesame Street, where Lena sang the song “It’s Not Easy Being Green” with Kermit. I remember watching this as a kid, and feeling just so sad for Kermit, you know? Sure, I didn’t “get” the whole meaning of the song back then, but it sure as heck related to poor Kermie in my mind.
There’s something about Ms. …read more

Crooner Week: Lena Horne – Did You Know?

Crooner Week: Lena Horne – Did You Know?

This week’s crooner is Lena Horne! Here’s some info on the legendary “woo-woo-woo-woo” female jazz crooner:

Lena Mary Calhoun Horne was born June 30, 1917 in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York City, New York. She grew up in an upper middle class black bourgeois community.
Horne became the first African American performer to sign a long-term contract with a major Hollywood studio, namely Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. She made her debut with MGM in 1942’s Panama Hattie and became famous in 1943 for her rendition of Stormy Weather in the movie of the same name (which she made while on loan to 20th Century Fox from …read more

Harry Connick, Jr. Audio-gasms

Harry Connick, Jr. Audio-gasms

Okay, so we all know what audio-gasms (otherwise referred to as eargasms) are, don’t we? Well check out these mp3’s of the sexy-smoothness that is Harry Connick, Jr. and you’re sure to find out what I mean!
“Smile” – from the Hope Floats soundtrack

Edit: Okay, I’m a ‘tard. I’ve been notified that the above mp3 is sung by Lyle Lovett, and not Harry Connick, Jr.!! It sounds so smooth and sweet, like Harry’s voice, but I double checked, and it is the country crooner Lyle, and not Harry singing it. I’m in SHOCK! I’ve heard Lyle before, and never would I …read more

7 “Secrets” Meme – from the Style It Less Fashionista

Okay, so apparently pingbacks aren’t showing up quickly, and I’m not the only one. Dexie tagged me with this meme back in early December, and the pingback just showed up now in my list. So here we go:
1. I’m very passionate about animals, but I’m not a vegetarian.
2. My friends and family simply don’t understand my big band/swing music/crooner obsession.
3. I believe that Nutella is a creation handed down by God to create happiness on Earth.
4. Seafood is a weakness of mine. I could eat it every day for the rest of my life and not get sick of it …read more

Crooner Week: Harry Connick, Jr. – MadTV circa 1996

Ok, so I know it’s a little past the holidays, but I found this clip on YouTube featuring Harry Connick, Jr. and Orlando Jones from a 1996 episode of MadTV.
Revs. LaMont Nixon Fatback and Dr. Michael Cassidy talk about “the true meanin’ of Chrimmah”… all the things you can do with a “Hair Connick, Joonyah” Christmas CD when you’re all alone during the holidays. At the end, they wish you “A Happy Hanukkah from Harry Connicka!”

Poll Results: Who’s got the better voice, Bing or Buble?

Poll Results: Who’s got the better voice, Bing or Buble?

According to a poll started Jan. 4th, and run on this site through today, Jan. 24th, 15 voters determined that Michael Buble has a better voice, hands down, over Bing Crosby given all other things considered. While I’m in agreement, in a way, I’m kind of surprised at that answer!
New poll is up on the sidebar: Does Harry Connick, Jr. truly deserve the nickname “Vice Chairman of The Board”? (see this post)

Crooner Week: Harry Connick, Jr. – Did You Know?

Crooner Week: Harry Connick, Jr. – Did You Know?

Opening Harry Connick, Jr. Crooner Week with a list of facts about the Southern crooner…

Harry’s birthday is on 9/11 (1967). His birth name is Joseph Harry Fowler Connick, Jr. and he was born in New Orleans, LA.
He’s been nicknamed “Vice-Chairman of The Board”. As you may know, Frank Sinatra is “Chairman of The Board”. What an HONOR to be equated! Apparently, Sinatra had nothing but praise for Connick, and referred to him simply as The Kid.
Gave up smoking at the insistence of fellow crooner, Mel Tormé.
He’s earned several multi-platinum and gold albums, Grammy, Tony and Emmy awards, Cable Ace, Golden …read more

Crooner Week: Bobby Darin – My all time favorite Darin song, mp3, and lyrics

Crooner Week: Bobby Darin – My all time favorite Darin song, mp3, and lyrics

Bobby Darin Crooner Week is over, gang. I’m leaving you with an mp3 and lyrics to one of my all time favorite Bobby Darin song and the lyrics. I even snagged a YouTube vid of him singing this one. Can you guess what it is before you click to get through the jump?
I’ll give you a hint, my future husband, Michael Bublé does a cover of this one. And I can honestly say that while it’s great, I love Bobby’s original version just a teeny bit more.
Are you ready?
