Dean Martin c. 1964

Dean Martin c. 1964

I stand by the fact that I was just born in the wrong era.
It makes me think about things like reincarnation and stuff sometimes, when I think about how drawn I am to the music and the lifestyle of the 40s, 50s, and 60s… I know, it’s weird, but it really makes me wonder.
Here’s the “drunken dreamboat”… Dino:

My theme song…

My theme song…

Okay, I’m doing a lot of soul-searching and hard work on myself these days. This song has always gotten me through a lot, and I really love it.
I’m feeeeeeelinnnnnnn…….. gooood.

Okay okay… here’s Nina Simone’s version too:

Bobby Vinton and Akon – Mr. Lonely

Bobby Vinton and Akon – Mr. Lonely

Okay, I went to do some research on the Bobby Vinton song “Mr. Lonely” because I had remembered that Carlton on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air once slow danced with Tyra Banks to it. Yes, I have that amazing talent, to recall various music and television or movies that play clips of these awesome songs.
So anyway, I’m not an Akon fan. I’m not a hater, but I just don’t enjoy that kind of music usually. I did, at one point in my life, enjoy Tupac and maybe Cypress Hill or Onyx and stuff, but really, nowadays, I’m just “too …read more

Weekend Song and Drink – A few days early…

Weekend Song and Drink – A few days early…

Yes, I know it’s a few days early, but today is National Piña Colada Day, and who can resist gettin’ your weekend on a little early in celebration of this great cocktail?
In trying to find a song with the drink in the lyrics, the only thing I could come up with is the Rupert Holmes song “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” which kind of stinks because good ol’ Rupert’s not a crooner, and that song is so late-70’s it’s ridiculous. (Of course, Garth Brooks sang about “Two Piña Coladas” and I’m sure Jimmy Buffet did a song or two involving …read more

I love you for sentimental reasons – Julia Nunes on Ukulele.

I love you for sentimental reasons – Julia Nunes on Ukulele.

Okay, I discovered Julia Nunes over the weekend, cause someone told me to look her up in YouTube and I’m just seriously having a major girl crush on this chick! LOL
Seriously, I know, she’s a ukulele player and you might think that’s kinda strange, but OH MY GOD she’s really good at it, her voice is great, and she’s just adorable. Besides, ukuleles are Hawaiian instruments, and back in the 40’s and 50’s, people loved Hawaii. So there.
Okay, okay… So here’s Julia’s video where she’s opening up her new uke and singing “I Love You For Sentimental …read more

Michael Buble on Aussie Talk Show “Rove”

Michael Buble on Aussie Talk Show “Rove”

Okay, this is really cool – I haven’t seen him being so silly like this on any talk show (day or night) before, and maybe it’s because I’m in the US and the FCC is a bunch of haughty high and mighties. I love how he talks about the nachos and underwear, but even more than that I love the challenge he gets from Jack Black.
Apparently Mike once killed a bunny (quite sure it was an accident, folks) and once received a teddy bear from a raging fan that he gave to one of his producer’s kids, and when she …read more

Helen O’Connell and the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra

Helen O’Connell and the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra

Yesterday, a reader commented on my post about Johnny Carson singing with The Rat Pack, and mentioned Helen O’Connell had done the same thing with Johnny at one point, with the song “Tangerine”.
I’ve hunted high, low, and sideways, and simply CANNOT find a clip of this anywhere! Sorry, Jerry!
What I did happen to find was a clip of her singing with the Jimmy (Yes, Jimmy, not Tommy, his well known brother) Dorsey Orchestra, “Man, That’s Groovy”.

As some of the commenters said on that video, I too didn’t think the word “Groovy” was used until the 60s!

Speaking of impressions: Sammy Davis Jr. did them too.

Speaking of impressions: Sammy Davis Jr. did them too.

A recent post showed Jim Carrey doing his impression of Sammy Davis, Jr. and gave my sort of moderately-offended-for-Sammy review.
Well here I have a video of Sammy doing impressions of his friends. He sings, “One for my Baby (One More for the Road)” while doing impressions of Fred Astaire, Nat ‘King’ Cole, Billy Eckstine, Vaughn Monroe, Tony Bennett, Mel Tormé, Louis Armstrong, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. Kinda cool. As I’m writing the post, the video’s playing in another window. I can’t see it, but I can hear it. And he’s doing a pretty good job of singing a …read more

Jim Carrey Does Sammy Davis, Jr.

Jim Carrey Does Sammy Davis, Jr.

I’ve got a bittersweet feeling about this one. I do like Jim Carrey, and I do like impersonation comedy, but I think he might’ve gone a little overboard with it all. To the point where it’s kind of a little bit offensive to Sammy Davis, Jr. in a way… I don’t know, what do you think?
It’s Jim from way back in his standup days… before he was a huge movie star for certain.
