Blog Project – Family Album Time! (Repost)

(Originally posted August 2007, I want to try to get this idea rolling again!)
Okay everyone – it’s time for the first ever Crooner Culture blog project!
Here’s the skinny…
Everyone has old family photos from the 40’s and 50’s laying around somewhere. Maybe your cousin’s got them all, or your sister, or your 80 year old Uncle Joe. But they’re somewhere.
Your job is to find the photo that reminds you of the classic “crooner era” and post it on your blog, writing whatever you know about when and where it was taken, and put a link in the post to this blog …read more

Elvis Presley – He did it his way.

Elvis Presley – He did it his way.

I couldn’t let today go by without an Elvis post. It’s 30 years ago today that Priscilla found him collapsed, Lisa Marie was only 9 years old.
This is FAR from my favorite version of the song, and this was filmed just two months before he died, but there’s no denying that Elvis took ownership of this song, much like Sinatra did.

Yes, Elvis was a crooner as much as a rock ‘n roller. I think he had more women screaming and swooning than Ol’ Blue Eyes and the Beatles put together, to be honest. And why not? He was gorgeous, he …read more

Swing Dancing from the Movie Swing Fever (1944)

Since I’m having so much fun trolling around YouTube today, I thought I’d throw this post up as well!
Wednesday night, my friend Todd and I are going to take some dance lessons with my friend Tina and her husband Matt. Todd’s already taken a good two months’ worth of swing lessons, and has tried to show me what he’s learned but it’s difficult when you’re not in a studio with the right music playing and so on.
I know the utter basic moves for swing dancing… step to the right with a little bounce, bounce back on your left and bring …read more

For Dexie – “Someone To Watch Over Me”

For Dexie – “Someone To Watch Over Me”

Fellow b5media blogger Dexie Wharton put in a song request yesterday – She said this song is for her mom, and that it’s quite special to her. Personally, I get a little mushy and sentimental whenever I hear this song myself.
I present the music and lyrics to Gershwin’s “Someone To Watch Over Me”… this version is performed by Frank Sinatra.

Someone To Watch Over Me
Gershwin/Gershwin

(There’s a saying old says that love is blind
Still were often told, seek and ye shall find
So I’m going to seek a certain gal I’ve had in mind)
(Looking everywhere, haven’t found her yet
She’s the big affair …read more

What defines a “crooner”?

What defines a “crooner”?

According to some, crooners are only male. Others believe in female crooners. Here’s how Wikipedia defines crooner:
Crooner is an epithet given to a male singer of a certain style of popular songs, dubbed pop standards. A crooner is a singer of popular ballads thus a “balladeer”. The singer is normally backed by a full orchestra or big band. Generally, crooners sang and popularized the songs from the Great American Songbook. Crooner was originally bestowed as a negative term, and many people given the term, such as Russ Colombo, did not consider themselves to be crooners. In an interview, Frank Sinatra …read more
